PLI DISPLAY — MEDIUM
Original type Study / October 2026
Working name. Version 0.100.

START HERE
Open specimen.html in a browser. The actual WOFF2 font, poster thumbnails,
styles, and editor are embedded; the specimen works offline.
The output folder is needed only for its font download links.

The idea is a narrow display sans with reversed stress: substantial tops
and bottoms, taut sides, folded shoulders, and modest flaring at the feet.
The animated lowercase sits against quieter capitals. Drawn from new cubic
outlines; no reference font was imported, traced, or transformed.

The research desk in the specimen links to Lineto, Optimo, Grilli Type,
Klim, and Ohno. The references inform the design questions and working
method; this study is not associated with any of those foundries.

313 glyphs, 302 encoded characters. Distinct upper- and lowercase letters.
Proportional lining figures; OpenType tnum substitutes 500-unit figures.
2,116 expanded kerning pairs. 1000 UPM, 700 cap height, 500 x-height.

INSTALL / USE
Open either OTF or TTF in Font Book to install; use one desktop format.
Select Pli Display / Medium. Begin around 48 px or larger. The posters use
one actual font size per headline, without horizontally stretching letters.
Normalize decomposed accented text to NFC; the specimen does this for you.
The preview identifies unsupported characters that use a fallback font.

STATUS
This is a single display master for real layout testing. Unhinted; no italic,
variable axes, or combining-mark positioning. It has not undergone independent
type-designer review or the sustained field testing of a retail family.
Next work should follow use in headlines: punctuation fit, accents in context,
and a second optical proof at smaller sizes. The current design is intended
for titles, not sustained small text.

VALIDATION
1,897 font and source checks passed. All three exports reopened successfully;
all outlines fit vertical metrics; lowercase mappings are distinct; HarfBuzz
verifies kerning, accented inheritance, and tabular-number substitution.
An exact outline-intersection audit found no collisions in all 2,704 basic
Latin letter pairs at the default spacing and kerning.
FreeType rendered both desktop formats. PNG word, glyph, detail, and poster
proofs were inspected visually and revised.
45 stylesheet and DOM interaction checks passed at desktop and mobile defaults.
These cover typing, multiline text, escaping, accents, unsupported characters,
size, tracking, leading, kerning, tabular figures, samples, themes, and reset.
Actual browser rendering was not verified because local URL automation is
blocked in the available browser tool.

REBUILD
Install source/requirements.txt in a Python environment, then run:
  python source/build.py
  python source/make_specimen.py
  python source/validate.py
For editor checks, install Node.js dependencies linkedom and cssom, then run:
  node source/test-specimen.cjs
The poster label renderer uses the macOS Helvetica system font.

COORDINATED STUDY EDITION
The current specimen has seven sections: large cover, font information, full
character set, eight sizes, dense poster, interactive glyphs and font in use.
A matching seven-page vector PDF is in output/pdf/. The font-in-use example
is an imagined application. Study is the shared identity across the series.
The shared builder is ../type-studies/source/build.py; its config, CSS and
JavaScript are included in the complete Study collection. The existing font
proof builder calls it automatically when that shared folder is available.
Use the complete collection archive to rebuild or navigate all five studies.
