LATCH MONO / MEDIUM
Original type Study · October 2026 · Version 0.101

A monospaced stencil with squared bowls, softer lowercase shoulders, and
open counters. Every character occupies 640 units in a 1,000-unit em.
The stencil openings close through stylistic set 01 (ss01), without
changing a single character's advance width.

USE
Install either the OTF or TTF desktop font, not both at once.
Open specimen.html directly in a browser; no server or internet is required.
Type in the labeled textarea. The large preview updates below it.
Toggle Solid to close the stencil openings. The supplied desktop and web
fonts expose the same alternates through OpenType stylistic set 01.
CSS: font-feature-settings: "ss01" 1;
Keep tracking at zero for the exact monospaced grid.

COVERAGE
410 glyphs: 292 encoded characters, 117 Solid alternates, and .notdef.
Uppercase, distinct lowercase, figures, ASCII punctuation, selected
extended Latin letters and precomposed accents, currency and math symbols.
The specimen reports characters not drawn in this master and normalizes
accented text to NFC where a precomposed character exists.

DESIGN STATUS
A first working display master, not a finished retail family. One weight;
no italic, variable axes, hinting, or combining-mark positioning. It has no
kerning: every character, including spaces and punctuation, has the same
advance. This is a display stencil design, not a fabrication-ready cutting
system for every symbol. The name is a working title.

VERIFICATION
All three exports were reopened and checked for matching coverage, fixed
advances, horizontal and vertical bounds. HarfBuzz verified every ss01
substitution and unchanged advances. FreeType rendered both desktop
formats. PNG word/glyph proofs and posters were visually inspected.
The headline editor passed 45 CSS/DOM checks, including multiline input,
accent normalization, literal pasted markup, color changes, sliders,
Solid toggling and reset at desktop/mobile defaults.
Actual browser rendering was not verified: local URL automation is blocked.

REBUILD
From the package directory, with Python 3 and source/requirements.txt:
  python3 -m pip install -r source/requirements.txt
  python3 source/build.py
  python3 source/make_specimen.py
  python3 source/validate.py
Poster/proof labels use Helvetica.ttc at the standard macOS system path;
replace that label-font path in source/proof.py on other platforms.
For editor checks, install Node.js packages linkedom and cssom, then:
  node source/test-specimen.cjs

All font outlines were constructed for this project. No existing font
outlines were imported or modified.

REVISION 0.101 — A CONSISTENT STENCIL RULE
The main bowl openings now follow a common vertical seam, 76 units wide
and centered at x=320 in the 640-unit cell. Bowl letters and related arches
repeat this rhythm. Structural stems and diagonals stay intact where needed:
4 opens only through its crossbar, and m has two optically narrower shoulder
breaks. Small rings have proportionally smaller vertical breaks.
The zero diagonal is fully joined to the bowl at both ends; its flat-cap
notches are removed. Its stencil bridges open the top and bottom rim while
leaving the diagonal continuous. Slashed O/o inherit this construction.
Solid alternates, accents and the editable UFO have been rebuilt.
proofs/Stencil-Revision-Comparison.png shows the before/after drawings.
The validation suite checks the common seam, solid restoration, and generous
overlap at both zero junctions in addition to the existing export checks.
Replace an installed older master with v0.101 and reopen the design app.

COORDINATED STUDY EDITION
The current specimen has seven sections: large cover, font information, full
character set, eight sizes, dense poster, interactive glyphs and font in use.
A matching seven-page vector PDF is in output/pdf/. The font-in-use example
is an imagined application. Study is the shared identity across the series.
The shared builder is ../type-studies/source/build.py; its config, CSS and
JavaScript are included in the complete Study collection. The existing font
proof builder calls it automatically when that shared folder is available.
Use the complete collection archive to rebuild or navigate all five studies.
